Kampong

Many people have written about it. I know Neil Humphreys did.

It even deserves a report in the New York Times* earlier this year.

Anyway, its charm, simplicity, serenity, and rarity will soon be missed by many.

Amid the size of 3 football fields, residents continue to enjoy the kampong cameraderie in their zinc-roofed, atap wooden houses, with the beauty of nature, and rambutan, jackfruit trees and coconut trees in their own backyard.

Who would have thought a quaint little village, untouched by the claws of modernization, still sits quietly - all this while - in this modern city state of ours?

Sadly, URA has announced plans for its redevelopment.

There are about 20 households still staying there.

Go say hello to the residents of Kampong Buangkok.

Do it before this last disappearing kampong ... disappears!

Their friendly dogs and cats will welcome you too! :)

Diversion

Covert operations spilling onto public corridors?

Simply too much wasted space on the media these days for a dispute taking place in a particularly secular organization.

Lifeline

Friends are for life - goes the title of a Sunday Times article today.

It reports that the role of friendship is often under-valued and under-appreciated, and that it actually "has a bigger impact on our psychological well-being than family relationships."

The studies show that having friends helps people cope better with life and its illnesses. Ok, that's cool.

Friendship has a greater effect on our health than a spouse or family member. Hmm.

People with more friends tend to live longer. Wow.. True or not?

Anyway, we all know friends help make our lives better, but longer? That'll be a nice bonus :)

So, literally. Friends are for life.
